15 Ways to build a visually interesting Flat Lay

1. USE NEGATIVE SPACE

Starting with as few items as possible is a great way to build up a scene. You can then figure out how each new element will work to add to a setup, making them complement what you’ve already put in place rather than having them create clutter.
Shoot at each stage as you build up your layout. Not only will you come away with more images, but you’ll also continue to learn about how to construct a scene when you come to sit down and edit your images.
Now you can start adding things to make the scene visually interesting and your image stand out:

 2. LAYERS

When you start to add props to your Flatlay frame, try and think in layers to create depth and volume. You don´t have to layer everything, but layering parts of your props will often make it look more natural, casual and professional. Use multiples, especially in odd numbers.

3. TEXTURES AND PATTERNS

Whether it's the backdrop or miscellaneous items, having texture in a photo easily creates visual interest for the viewer. Try adding textures like lace or linen fabrics, interesting plates with fun finishes, dried flowers, leather, wood or fur.

4. OVERFLOW

Overflowing your frame is one way of getting around not having enough space. It can also be a creative choice, prompting the viewer to imagine what’s outside of the frame based on everything that appears within, giving a sense of intrigue to your flat lay photo.

5. HUMAN TOUCH

There’s no reason not to incorporate a model — or even yourself if you have a tripod and timer — into your scene, and it can make the world that you’ve created feel more real and engaging. Holding a coffee cup, stirring, slicing, or writing bring in a little human element.

6. REPEAT ELEMENTS

Make a statement and bring out the importance of the hero subject by repeating certain elements again and again (this can be a shape, an ingredient, a colour..)

7. FOREGROUND

Add a foreground to the image that peaks into the frame, that is closer to the camera as the main subject, but is out of focus. This technique adds a sense of space and depth to an image. It can be a flower, some leaves a shadow or someone holding up a bowl!

8. STAY MINIMAL

Using space, that isn’t crowded with props can lead the viewer’s eye straight to the main subject. It adds harmony to an image and gives a sense of cleanliness and simplicity. It also creates a clean space for adding a copy and is popular in advertisement because it puts the product at the center of attention while leaving room for the viewer’s thoughts and associations. Perfect for beginners who don't have many prop items yet.

9. FRAMING

Framing is a very simple concept. It literally means creating a frame around your subject so it creates a visual frame and leads the eye towards the main subject inside that frame. It is also great for storytelling since the objects around your main subjects can add to the story and the feeling of the image.

10. BAG SPILL

Show me what's in your bag and I tell you who you are! Create this look of a tipped over bag to show what you carry around you and give your followers a little glimpse of your everyday / work life

11. SHOW THE INGREDIENT

A perfect and creative way to show the flavours, smell or ingredients of a product or a dish! Lay down your empty product container, collect props that best stimulate the viewer's taste and smell buds and start placing them in any creative order.

12. SPACE FOR TEXT

Perfect for blogs, promoting freebies, coaching website or anyone who just wants to add a personalised text or message to the image. Place an iPhone, iPad, an open book or a piece of stationary in your scene. You can then replace the screen with a website or add some personalised text in photoshop. Also great for stock images!

13. ORGANIZED CHAOS

Start with a hero item for this one, everything else is placed randomly so this at least gives you a starting point. Place your larger items in next, create layers and stack items on top of each other for detail. You will need to step back from this one quite often and check your placement and fill remaining gaps with the smallest items using interesting angles.

15. GET ARTY

Think outside the norm and create unexpected shapes out of your elements. Examine the colours, the texture and shape and surprise the viewer by layering them in a surprising, artistic way.
